Paul J. Carroll grew up in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. He moved to Baltimore, Maryland to study at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, earning Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in organ. Before his arrival at St. Pius X in 2013, he was Director of Music and later Artistic Director for the Concert Series at St. Louis Church in Clarksville, Maryland (2007-2014) where he had the opportunity to work with an abundance of singers and instrumentalists to create a parish-wide music program for the parish of nearly 5000 families. From 2002-2007 Paul was the Director of Music at St. Clement Church in Baltimore where he work equally with the English and Spanish speaking communities.
Paul made his European solo debut in Italy in 2001 with Assisi Performing Arts and has performed over 100 concerts throughout Italy over the last 16 years in sacred music, chamber music, opera, and musical theater.
Beginning in 2013, Paul created Organ Tour, a program for organists and pianists to study and play organs — historic and modern — throughout the world. These educational opportunities have allowed musicians a new cross-cultural lens. As a result, Paul has recently finished translating into English, Notes on the Organ, a book on the history of the pipe organ in Italy and Introduction to Listening and Playing The Well-Tempered Clavier of Johann Sebastian Bach, both written by friend and colleague, Ennio Cominetti.
As an educator, Paul created the music program at the Shoshana S. Cardin School in Pikesville, Maryland, where he worked from 2004-2013. While at Cardin he developed cross-curricular projects between music and history as well as music and Judaism.
Paul is a member of the American Guild of Organists and is Past Dean of the Baltimore Chapter. He is the President of the New Jersey Chapter of the World Piano Teachers Association. Paul is also a member of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians and the Music Teachers National Association. More information is available at www.pauljamescarroll.org.
