I am Rev. Joemin Kharlo C. Pariñas and I was born on the 14th of August 1993, in Bangued, Abra, Philippines. I grew up in a typical Filipino family and they used to call me with my nickname “Jayke.” My parents were very supportive and loving parents, who cultivated and raised me with values and principles in life such as becoming respectful, helpful, hospitable, family-oriented, and most of all, becoming a God-fearing person. I started my seminary studies and seminary formation when I was in high school. Last May 2020, I finished my seminary formation and studies at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland earning my Master’s Degree in Divinity.
My vocation towards priesthood is a call and a magnificent gift from God. That is why I want to respond to His call and serve Him. I want to become a disciple of Christ in sharing and spreading His good news to others, most especially to those who are thirsty for His word. But in order for me to achieve this dream of mine, I need to fully surrender myself and accept Christ wholeheartedly within my life. As we all know, becoming a priest is not an easy task because there are a lot of responsibilities and sacrifices to make. A priest must be obedient to his bishop. He must be responsible to the mission and work that his bishop gave him. He must be a symbol of God’s love and mercy. He must also be a bridge in bringing and connecting people to God. Moreover, he has a very important role in the Catholic Church and in our society, most especially the Church we have today wherein he serves as spiritual director in guiding and strengthening the faith of God’s people.
As a priest of Christ, I have chosen the path of becoming a diocesan priest because I want to work and serve in a certain geographical area like the Diocese of Paterson. I want to preach the Gospel and share it to people most especially to those who are thirsty for the word and love of God. I want to be a man devoted to service. Thus, I want to preach, teach and share the Gospel of God to my parishioners. I want to inspire and guide them in their relationship with God and in their spiritual life.
Together with the formation that I had in the seminary, I was formed to become responsible, thoughtful and obedient. It also strengthened my personal faith and spiritual life wherein my relationship with God grew stronger and deeper. It cultivated me to become a social person so that I can properly teach and preach the word of God to His people. My formation in theology helped me nurture my understanding on God and the Catholic faith. Also, this formation served as an epitome of my priestly vocation for it truly formed and directed me to become God’s steward.
Last August 1, 2020, the Most Reverend Kevin Sweeney, D.D. ordained me to the priesthood and after the ordination, he assigned me to serve at Our Lady of the Mountain and St. Mark the Evangelist Parishes as a parochial vicar. Currently, I am assigned to St. Pius X Parish as a parochial vicar. As a priest and as a fisherman of Christ, God acted in me in my priestly assignment through His mission in this world. That mission is to share His love and good news to others. Just like Jesus where He sent Him to preach the good news to others, my priestly assignment enables me to show the love of the Lord and preach His word to everyone, especially to the parishioners of St. Pius X Parish.
